I searched for the best electric shaver for quite a while. I define "best" primarily by the closeness of shave and the lack of irritation afterwards. I have quite sensitive skin and experienced lots of irritation (especially on my neck) from blade razors (mach 3, fusion, quattro, sensor excel -- you name it, i've tried it) and the dry electric shavers.
I had tried a few of the high end electric shavers. Braun 8585, Norelco Arcitec, and the Braun 360 to name a few. In all of the ones I tried I got lots of irritation and the shaves were sub par even with multiple passes over my face. I ended up returning each of the electrics and went back to blade shaving for a while, convinced that all electrics were inferior to a blade. A few months passed and I started looking again for electrics. I came across the Panasonic line of wet/dry shavers on a recommendation I found online (some internet forum). I did some research and everywhere I looked, the Panasonic wet/dry shavers had rave reviews. Even Amazon.
I recently upgraded to the ES8249 from the ES8228 and the new one is even better than the old one. The ES8228 was a terrific shaver. I had little to no irritation from it (some around the neck in the beginning) but the closeness of the shave was unrivaled. So I had a lot of confidence when I switched to the ES8249. I wasn't disappointed. The ES8249 is even better than the ES8228. It requires less strokes on the face to catch all the hairs (this cuts down on shaving time and even lowers the chances for irritation) and it gets just as close as the ES8228 (if not closer) which was already as close as a blade. Yes, as close as a blade. One day when I was about three months into using the ES8228, I shaved with a Gilette Fusion and the shave was indistinguishable from the Panasonic's shave. Up until that point, I still thought blade shaves were closer. Seeing is believing.
I mainly use this shaver in the shower with shaving cream and a shaving mirror. It only takes 5-6 minutes to shave with a week's worth of growth, which is quite thick and long. It buzzes through it with no problem, and doesn't pull on the hairs like the Braun and Norelco electrics. I found the Braun and Norelcos so poor in comparison to the two Panasonics I've owned that I wonder if the only reason people still use the others is because they have not tried a Panasonic. I think this is quite possible since in all the reviews about electric razors I could find anywhere, the Panasonics were hardly ever mentioned. I think this is quite a shame.
I recommended the Panasonic wet/dry line to my brother, who picked up an 8109 a few weeks ago. He was instantly impressed with how close the shave was after the first time he used it. He had been using a Braun 8585 supplemented with a blade razor for the hairs the Braun would miss.
